Common questions

Is Francois de Marigny registered with the HPCSA?

Yes. Francois de Marigny is a clinical psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, practising in Morningside, Durban.

What kind of therapy does he practise?

Solution-focused therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy, grounded in attachment theory. The work is collaborative — goals are agreed with the client rather than prescribed — and it focuses on identifying how thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and assumptions affect the way a person feels.

Who does he work with?

Adolescents and adults, individually and as couples. He does not do therapy with children under the age of 15. Children are assessed only in the context of divorce and relocation evaluations.

Where is the practice?

190 Montpelier Road, Morningside, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal 4001, South Africa. Consultations also take place online.

Can I be seen in French?

Yes. Francois speaks English and French. French-speaking psychologists are scarce in Durban, so this is worth asking about.

How do I make an appointment?

The practice prefers WhatsApp: send a message to 031 265 0982. You can also telephone the same number or email admin@wellmind.co.za. The practice consults Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. There is no online booking system, and enquiries are answered during consulting hours.

How much does a session cost?

Psychotherapy is charged at R1500 per hour. Psycho-forensic evaluations, mediation, parenting coordination and divorce coaching are not covered by medical aids, and their fees are available on request.

Will my medical aid pay?

Receipted statements can be submitted to your medical aid for reimbursement, and where you qualify for Prescribed Minimum Benefits the practice deals directly with your medical aid after the first consultation. Psycho-forensic evaluations, mediation, parenting coordination and divorce coaching are not covered by medical aids.

What are Prescribed Minimum Benefits?

PMBs are a set of conditions that South African medical schemes are required by law to cover, regardless of your plan or benefit exhaustion. Certain mental health conditions are included. Whether your circumstances qualify is determined by your scheme, and the practice can deal with them directly after the first consultation.

Is what I say confidential?

In therapy, yes, subject to the limits every psychologist works within — risk of serious harm to yourself or another person, statutory obligations to report harm to a child, and a court order. In a psycho-legal evaluation confidentiality works differently, because the report is written for a court and will be seen by the court and the attorneys. That difference is explained before any assessment starts.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. This works well for people outside Durban, people who travel, and people for whom getting to an appointment is itself the difficulty.
